Rekindling Historical Bonds Through Lacrosse:

A Historic Meeting at the Governor’s Mansion

In a momentous gathering that underscored the deep-rooted connections between the Netherlands and the Haudenosaunee Nations, a delegation from Nederland Lacrosse joined forces with the coaching staff of the Haudenosaunee Nationals. Together, they were honored to attend a reception hosted by the Governor of New York and His Majesty the King of the Netherlands at the Governor’s Mansion in Albany, NY.

The Dutch men’s box lacrosse team’s head coach, Neal Powless (He, Him, His) (Onondaga, Haudenosaunee), was accompanied by his assistant coach and head coach of the first Dutch Women’s box lacrosse team, Arttu Sesselaar (the Netherlands), as well as Jim Barnes, the assistant coach of the Haudenosaunee field lacrosse team (Mohawk Nation, Haudenosaunee). This distinguished group had the unique opportunity to share their passion for lacrosse, a game with deep cultural significance often referred to as the creator’s game, and to discuss the historic 411-year treaty between the Dutch and Haudenosaunee, known as the Two Row Wampum or Gaswéñdah.

The upcoming Box Lacrosse World Championships, set to take place in Utica, NY from September 20-29, and the inclusion of lacrosse in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, present perfect opportunities to further strengthen the bonds between our nations. These events not only highlight the sport’s growing prominence but also serve as a platform for rekindling the historical relationship between the Dutch and Haudenosaunee.

A poignant moment during the meeting was when Jim Barnes presented His Majesty with a wooden lacrosse stick, specially strung with the colors of the Dutch flag. This symbolic gesture was a testament to our bond of Peace, Friendship, and Forever.

Standing side by side with Neal Powless, originally named Hawhenawdies (meaning: His voice is heard among the people), was a profound honor, representing the entire Nederland Lacrosse community. Our shared history and mutual respect were evident as we reflected on the enduring significance of the Two Row Wampum treaty.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Barry Nieuwenhuijs (she/her) and Serv Wiemers for their dedication and hard work in making this historic meeting possible. As we look to the future, we are eager to continue this dialogue of Peace, Friendship, and Forever, not only between our nations but potentially extending this message to the world.

World Lacrosse today announced the pools for the 2024 Box Championships, set for September 20-29 in Utica, New York, with 28 teams in the men’s box championship and 10 teams in the first-ever women’s box championship.

In the women’s competition, the teams were snake seeded based on final rankings from the 2022 Women’s Championship, also with adjustment for continental balance.

Trainingscamp strated last week in preparation for the European Box Lacrosse Championships in Hannover. The Dutch will be competing in their second European Championships.

After the first gameday in December was cancelled only 24h before as we we're locked down again, the 30th of January we were finally allowed back into the rink. As it was short noticed we merged some teams together to play some ball again. All the games can be watched below.

Weekend August 15-16

4 assembled teams of 12 players will battle each other in this one weekend tournament hosted in the Disasterdome in Utrecht.
The players will be drafted by the team captains of the four teams.

There will be a campground next to the box rink and we will host a bbq and party on the saturday evening.

Saturday: 3 games per team
Sunday: Play Offs 2 games per team

Price: 50 euro per player.

Includes: Team T-Shirt, Camping, bbq, 2 x lunch, 1 breakfast, refs & tournament fee.

Dutch Box Lacrosse Re-Strated with first scimmage

In the outdoor Roller Rink in Amsterdam some Dutch players took their first lacrosse stps after the Covid-19 Lockdown. A great first step again for box lacrosse. Now we're starting preparation towards the Frank Menschner Cup in Prague this September where we will be traveling to with the Orange Warriors team.

NOC * NSF advises its members to cancel all club meetings - including sports matches - until March 31.

As we as Dutch (Box) Lacrosse follow the example of the Dutch Olympic Comittee we will postpone all our activities until (at least) the end of the month. Be save!

Here's the statement from the NOC * NSF posted on March 12:

NOC * NSF advises its members to cancel all club meetings - including sports matches - until March 31.

On Thursday afternoon, March 12, the Dutch government took new measures to combat the spread of the corona virus. In short, they mean that what was the advice of Noord-Brabant at the beginning of the week, now applies to the whole of the Netherlands and until 31 March.

That is why NOC * NSF again, and now for the whole of the Netherlands, strongly recommend that all sports events, including competition, practice and training matches, be canceled. At least until March 31.

For the whole of the Netherlands, the cabinet has also called for a sharp reduction in social contacts in general. This call is supported by NOC * NSF by calling on Dutch sports to cancel all other club meetings such as training, consultations, meetings and celebrations.

Orange Warriors Win the FBBLL 2020

A tournament comprised of 8 teams and 90 participants, the first edition of the Franco-Belgian League tournament is in the books. The Orange Warriors took home first place as they defeated teams such as Lille Seaguls and Braine Lacrosse. However, this is only the beginning as the team prepares for the EBOX tournament in Prague.

Over 20 women showed up fully geared up for the first official Dutch Women's Box Lacrosse team in Utrech on saturday the 25th of January. Coach Arttu Sesselaar walked the ladies trough the basic stick and box skills drills and finishing off with a scrimage.

Thanks everybody for making this a succesfull event and see you all at the scrimmage at the Dutch Championships.
